Our History
Founded in 1937, NZDA is New Zealand’s recognised national body representing and speaking for hunters generally. The fundamental aim of the Association is to ensure that the organisation and management of recreational hunting in New Zealand is carried out by hunters.
In the current climate, hunting and sports shooting are facing some really big challenges and hunters need to be proactive in protecting their interest. It is most important to belong to some form of organisation that has a mandate to look after your interests as an outdoor enthusiast and/or recreationalist.
The old saying “there’s strength in numbers” is very true and every member of the NZDA team adds to that strength. We must support each other, irrespective of your interest. From big game hunting to just having a walk in the mountains, there are many issues which concern you and only a collective voice will assert much influence when confronting the “authorities”.

Co-Vice President
Hunting and the mountains have been a big part of my life for many years, and moving to Wanaka 7 years ago has only strengthened that connection.
Joining the UCDA 3 years ago introduced me to a great group of like-minded hunters who share a passion for the outdoors and making the most of this amazing region.
I joined the branch committee last year to give back to the hunting community, and stepping into the Co-VP role this year alongside Zane gives me the opportunity to help drive the club forward.
I’m especially keen to support Murray and the work already underway on the new rifle range project, while also helping get more youth and families involved in hunting, conservation, and the outdoors.

Murray Burns
Secretary
They encourage friendships and quality relationships through involvement and participation, training and education, leadership, environmental awareness and recognise the need and importance for a structured body that will advocate for the development and protection of introduced game animal species and foster the sport of recreational hunting .
I was therefore delighted when I came to live in Wanaka, to meet a group of like-minded old boys who were motivated to reconvene the Upper Clutha Branch NZDA, which had gone into recess some years earlier.
The Branch has operated now since 2009 and provides an opportunity for young and old with a love for the outdoors and hunting, to gather and share their experiences and pursue an interest and lifestyle in a natural environment that is the envy of many.

Zane De'souza
Co-Vice President
I have been a proud member of the Upper Clutha Deerstalkers for three years, spending the last two of those as an active member of the club committee. As one of the younger voices on the committee, I find found it deeply rewarding to give back to the club and contribute fresh perspectives, feedback and ideas to help shape its direction.
Now stepping into the role of Co-Vice President, I’m excited about what lies ahead — growing the club’s membership, increasing engagement across all age groups, and helping build a stronger, more connected community for hunters and outdoor enthusiasts across the Upper Clutha region.
“Being part of this club has given me a lot — I just want to give something back and help make it even better for the members we have and the ones still to come.”
