War On Wapiti—The Roadshow | Wānaka

The Fiordland Wapiti Foundation deer management program is under-threat.

The Fiordland Wapiti Foundation’s ongoing efforts in deer control and biodiversity conservation represent a model of successful community-led conservation. The FWF’s unparalleled effectiveness in deer control, and its success in leveraging partnerships, volunteer efforts, and innovative financial models, highlights the FWF’s critical role in preserving Fiordland National Park’s unique biodiversity.

But all this could change. Currently Forest & Bird are challenging the legalities of the Wapiti Foundations agreement with the department of conservation through a judicial review and the court date is looming fast and is set for November 2024. Forest & Bird do acknowledge the magnificent work that the Wapiti Foundations does. However, they are still challenging the future of the Fiordland Wapiti Foundation and its ongoing work with the judicial review.

The department of conservation, Forest & Bird, and the Fiordland Wapiti Foundation and all three legal teams are currently talks and we are hope for some common sense.
